Ethereum Halal Fatwa — Is ETH Halal in Islam?
فتوى إيثيريوم في الإسلام
Ethereum (ETH) is the second-largest cryptocurrency and the foundation of most DeFi and NFT activity. Its Shariah analysis is more complex than Bitcoin's because: (1) ETH has a PoS staking mechanism with yield implications, (2) Ethereum is the platform on which most riba-based DeFi protocols run, and (3) ETH itself is distinct from the DeFi activity it enables. This fatwa overview separates the spot ETH ruling from the DeFi and staking questions.

Start halal trading →Frequently asked questions
›Is Ethereum halal?
Spot ETH ownership is permissible under AAOIFI-aligned analysis. Mufti Faraz Adam and IFC UK endorse this. The staking yield question is separate — permissible with conditions under majority opinion, or avoided entirely under stricter opinion.
›Does the Merge make Ethereum more or less halal?
The Merge (PoW to PoS) introduced staking yield — a new Shariah question — but also removed energy-intensive proof-of-work. Overall, the Shariah picture post-Merge is nuanced: spot ownership remains clean; staking yields require the conditions in the staking fatwa.
›Is DeFi on Ethereum halal?
DeFi is not halal or haram as a category — it depends on the specific protocol and activity. ETH used for halal DEX swaps: permissible. ETH deposited on Aave for interest: haram. See the DeFi fatwa page for a full breakdown.
