Screened universe · AAOIFI-aligned framework
Layer-1 blockchains like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, and Avalanche generally screen halal because their tokens represent direct ownership of network utility — not debt, interest, or a wager. Each coin below passes our AAOIFI-aligned riba, gharar, maysir, and haram-sector gates for spot ownership.

Verdicts cover direct spot ownership only. Coins marked with caveats disclose them on their verdict page. Operational screening result — not a fatwa, not investment advice.
Layer-1 (base-chain) tokens are the most consistently halal category in crypto. Their economic return derives from network demand for blockspace, not from an interest coupon. The main caveats are native staking yield on proof-of-stake chains — where our screening distinguishes service-fee staking from riba-like fixed yield — and per-chain governance concerns, disclosed on each verdict page.
Layer-0 interoperability hubs (Polkadot, Cosmos) are included here because their tokens are likewise base-infrastructure assets rather than financial contracts.
Read the full gate-by-gate criteria on our screening methodology page, or check any specific coin with the halal coin screener.
A Layer-1 token is a digital commodity: it grants access to a network's blockspace and settles ownership on-chain. There is no debt contract, no interest accrual, and no counterparty wager in spot ownership — so the riba, gharar, and maysir gates typically pass.
It depends on the mechanism. Validation rewards that compensate a real service (securing the network) differ from fixed, guaranteed yield marketed like interest. Our per-coin pages disclose where staking yield is a caveat. Our bot never stakes — it trades spot only.
Layer-1 coins fail screening when their primary economics depend on a prohibited structure — for example chains whose dominant use is gambling applications, or tokens with embedded interest-bearing mechanics. Each excluded coin's page documents exactly which gate failed.
